Cedric has shown a tremendous knack for going the extra mile to communicate with his clients- always being sure to report on sweeping issues as soon as they occur.  He is a team player, always helping out and working closely with his counterparts in landscape, porter, and steam cleaning.  Cedric continues to set the bar higher, encouraging everyone to work at their full potential.

ICSC hosted a program on Hispanic Markets, which was co-sponsored by CAM Services.  Following are some insights gleaned from the event.

The Increasing Buying Power of the Hispanic Population

To understand how fast the U.S. Hispanic population is increasing, consider that the population is set to double by the year 2050.  Currently, 38.5% of the total population in California is Hispanic.  U.S. Hispanic demographic is younger and has a bigger family unit — the average household is 3.62, but in California this number is as high as 4-4.5.  If not for the Hispanic community, Los Angeles would have had a net population loss over the last ten years.  This is an important demographic to U.S. retailers, especially grocers.

How Food Retailers Can Benefit

The typical Hispanic household averages 26 trips a month to food retailers to cook meals from scratch with fresh ingredients.  In addition to regular grocery stores, Hispanics also frequent super stores, drug stores, meat shops, bakeries, corner stores, warehouse stores, dollar stores, convenience stores, and specialty shops.   Meal preparation is an important way that this community expresses their devotion to family, and is part of the reason that they prefer not to buy frozen or pre-packaged foods.  Hispanic grocery stores tend to sell 2-3 times the national average.  It is important that grocers specialize in meat and produce, which are in high demand, and should be replenished throughout the day as opposed to the typical American grocery store, which only restocks in the morning.

Common Misconceptions

Many incorrectly believe that the Hispanic market is made up primarily of downscale shoppers.  This community is made up of brand loyal shoppers who are conscious of what products they buy.  They are concerned with the latest and greatest and are willing to pay, an example is how the Hispanic community outpaces the market in the purchase of smart phones. Finally, the Hispanic consumer has high expectations of their shopping experience, and service and cleanliness are extremely important.

We hope that this summary has helped make you aware of the characteristics and opportunities driven by the Hispanic community.

Together, they represented Mt. San Antonio College against other 2-year colleges.  Raquel’s team joined STMA in the Fall Semester of 2011- their participation in STMA began with their passion for a turf class. The STMA Challenge is an annual competition started in 2005 in which teams must answer questions related to sports turf fields. Topics included: field maintenance, diseases, insects, turf and weed identification, etc.

The wiffle ball field pictured above was a project sparked by Raquel’s professor Brian Scott from the horticulture department at Mt. San Antonio College, who designed and installed the entire field along with turf students, which is placed right outside the horticulture building on campus.
